How are Deep Cycle batteries different from automotive batteries?

A deep cycle battery has the ability to be deeply discharged and charged many times during its service life. An automotive battery cannot withstand more than a few deep discharges before failure. This is what makes a deep cycle battery ideal for powering electrical equipment for long periods of time. This is also why an automotive or "starting" battery no longer will start your car if you accidentally leave the lights on more than a couple of times.
